How to Register as a Sole Trader in the UK

Small business team planning around a table

To register as a sole trader in the UK, you normally register for Self Assessment with HMRC. You must generally do this if your gross trading income is more than £1,000 in a tax year. Registering is not the same as forming a limited company: you remain personally responsible for the business and its tax.

When do you need to register as self-employed?

The £1,000 trading allowance is the first check. If income from self-employment is above it, registration is usually required. You may also register to evidence self-employment, make voluntary National Insurance contributions, or work under CIS. Check your particular position with HMRC if you have employment, rental income or a partnership as well.

What you need before you start

  • Your National Insurance number.
  • The date you began trading and your business activity.
  • A business name, if you use one.
  • A system for recording income, expenses and invoices from day one.

The key Self Assessment deadline

For a first return, HMRC says you normally need to tell it by 5 October after the end of the relevant tax year. The online return and payment deadline is usually 31 January. Register early: it gives you time to receive access details and organise your records.

Practical next steps

  1. Choose a clear business name and start keeping sales and expense records immediately.
  2. Check whether your income is above the trading allowance and whether registration is required.
  3. Register for Self Assessment using the HMRC route that matches your circumstances.
  4. Set aside money for Income Tax and National Insurance as income arrives.
